I know I have a tendency towards despondent, cash-strapped dudes who watch TV all day
but it’s like
dude
why are you so boring
you seemed interesting, but you’re actually really boring
how can a dude who wants to wear panties and be slapped around be so boring
why do I like a guy who is so passionless and boring
(b/c he puts up with my ADD and weird impulses and borderline crazy talk and watches Firefly w/ me and didn’t laugh when I told him the *real* reason I became vegetarian in the first place)
(and is really cute)
(and butts)

And I’ve noticed that people that are really into S & M are also usually really into Star Trek. Like, there’s this creepy connection between leather sex, Star Trek, and the Renaissance Faire.
This is one of the best videos I’ve seen in a long time!
Jem x Le Tigre is the BEST THING EVER
(what would an analogous band for the Misfits be??)
Who watched this today? Yes, this morning the 1985 American cartoon series Jem and the Holograms began rerunning on The Hub. In addition to being a cult favorite among cartoon and kitsch lovers, Jem is considered by some fans to be an “American magical girl show”. How so? The show, which aired in the heyday of Studio Pierrot’s magical idol franchise, bears a few similarities to the plot of these popular series. Jerrica, an 80s businesswoman with towering shoulder pads, is bequeathed a magical computer by her father which uses holographic technology to transform Jerrica into the radical rockstarlet Jem. In this premise we see some surface parallels to magical girls like Cutie Honey (who inherits her transformation device from her late father) and Creamy Mami (who likewise transforms to become a pop singer.) The series’ animation was also handled by magical girl nursery Toei Animation, who brought us both Cutie Honey and the other magical girls of the 60s-70s and later Sailor Moon.
Any notions of Jem’s inspiration by these magical girl series, of course, is conjecture. However, intentionally or not, the series comes across as a sort of remote cousin of the Pierrot magical idol series, the premise digested through another culture’s sensibilities. (One obvious difference is that where these Pierrot series feature children who transform into grown women to achieve fame, Jerrica is an adult who must assume a more youthful persona to become a performer!) Jem fits more naturally beside its Japanese magical girl cousins than some other Western series that wear their influences on their sleeves… of course, if Toei and Pierrot were to combine their powers and give us a Jem/Creamy Mami duet, I certainly would not complain!
everything I’ve been thinking lately but way more articulate
also there’s a lot of imagery (mostly background bubbly pastel shit) where you go WHOA that’s pretty dang shoujo Toei
(I was also thinking of how Pizazz/Eric Raymond were a critique of the hyper consumerism and bubble economy mentality in the 80’s but I don’t know nearly enough about anything to talk about THAT)
(I WAS NOT EXPECTING TO LIKE JEM THIS MUCH JESUS CHRIST)
so I’ve found the greatest fashion resource ever
(I’ve started watching Jem and now I have a million tabs of 80’s fashion scans open whoops)

‘Ralf looks so sad. Why does he look so sad?’
‘“Why don’t we take dolls instead of us?” From that date we were not needed anymore.’
‘In that time I had a nice face, today I have more on my brain. I was so childish then…’
